NIH/NCRR
The National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health awards High-end instrumentation grants to assist NIH-supported investigators to keep at the forefront of modern biology and medicine and to accelerate the rate at which researchers can acquire, analyze, display, and understand data. This program provided $1.988M for the purchase of the BASS system under award number NIH 1S10RR023069-01. This award number must appear in the acknowledgments section of all publications that report results obtained using the system.
Sun Microsystems
Sun Microsystems is not only a vendor to UNC but also an educational partner providing special hardware, software, system maintenance, professional services and consulting on the BASS project. Sun's Customer Ready Systems in Hillsborough, Oregon and the local account team of Skip Vail, Jeff Bates, Rick Cagle, Bob Cauthen and Mark Simmons worked closely with Nvidia and Qlogic to design this custom HPC cluster for UNC Computer Science. Sun worked in concert with Dr. Russell Taylor and his team to optimize the NIH grant dollars received by UNC. Sun and UNC then together used the UNC system wide Strategic Relationship Agreement with Sun to provide significant special educational discounts for the BASS Hardware, Installation and Support contracts.
NVIDIA
NVIDIA donated 40 GPU Computing Processors to bring the system total up to 180, almost doubling the GPU computing power available on the system. They have also provided expert advice and support on bringing the system up with the latest versions of CUDA and are providing performance testing on the system.
UNC
UNC provided matching funds to support a scientist liaison, hardware and software technicians, networking, and UPS. Support came from the following:
- Medical School
- College of Arts and Sciences
- Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development
- Institute for Advanced Materials, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
- Computer Science
- Biology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Information Technology Services
UNC Staff
Proposal
Dede Corvinus and Missy Wood pulled together the incredible list of details needed for the proposal, organized the entire document, and completed submission while the PI was out of town. Without them, this would not have gotten off the ground.
Operation
Brian White is the project manager for the BASS system, and has overseen the bid, installation, and support of the machine.
Murray Anderegg is the system administrator who is configuring and maintaining the cluster and grid engine.
John Sopko is managing the storage and backup systems on the machine and providing system administration support.
