The X NetsOf course, any Computer Science department is going to have any number of experimental networks. In particular, the DiRT group runs experimental local area networks as part of their research. Computer Science is also involved in some multisite networks, this page offers some information on these projects. Building such networks is by its nature a cooperative venture involving many groups. In particular, ATN Networking and UNC's Internet2 group been very helpful in bringing these networks online. NanonetThe nanonet was a private network designed by the DiRT group and ATN Networking linking buildings at the UNC campus in support of the Nanomanipulator Project. The goal of this network was to provide low latency and reduce jitter at reasonable bandwidth, but by 2004 this special service was no longer needed and the network was taken down. TelenetThe telenet network is a private experimental network with a direct link to the Abilene internet, used for experiments in teleimmersion technology, in particular the Office of the Future. The goal of the network is to provide high speed connectivity with as little competition for available bandwidth as possible.
