Library: VrpnNet 1.1.1

This is a maintenance release of VrpnNet. It does not add new functionality. Visual Studio 2005 support has been removed as per the project roadmap.

Future plans for VrpnNet

VRPN 7.21 was released today, so a new VrpnNet build will be arriving before the end of June July.

As I have a full-time day job these days, I don't really have that much time for hobby programming projects. As a result, here is the plan for VrpnNet:

  • Visual Studio 2005 support has been dropped earlier than expected. Everything should work through at least 1.2.0, as I don't use .NET 3.x-specific functionality, but I don't have room on my laptop's hard drive for another full VS installation.

Library: VrpnNet 1.1.0

This version of VrpnNet adds some early server support, and is built against VRPN 7.20 and Visual C++ versions 2005 SP1 and 2008 SP1. AnalogServer, ButtonServer, and MutexServer are complete, and an early preview of TrackerServer is included.

Upcoming server support in VrpnNet

After a lengther-than-intended wait (read: work), VrpnNet 1.1 is approaching release. The major new feature for this version is early support for servers.

Details after the break.

Utility: VrpnKeyboard 1.3.2

I've resurrected my "fake HiBall" application, written over a weekend in December 2004, for VRPN 7. This app lets you simulate a HiBall or other VRPN tracker/button device using keyboard controls similar to those in the legendary game Descent. There is also a joystick mode for the masochistic--the axes are hardcoded to my aging Sidewinder FF2.

I have not fixed the rotation bug. This app is provided as a service to those UNC students taking COMP 872 (formerly 239), Exploring Virtual Worlds and competing for its scarce hardware. It's no replacement for the actual tracker, but it'll get you through early testing.

And so it begins

Looks like the spammers have finally discovered the "Add Comment" links on this site. If the queue starts filling up too fast I'll start monkeying with the Drupal anti-spam modules, but for now manual moderation seems to be sufficient.

EVEIL2 enhancements for Fall 2008

This was an email I sent to the EVE mailing list.

I just committed revision 79 of Eveil to Subversion. Recent (i.e., fall 2008) additions that people should be aware of:

We're now on Gamebryo 2.5. Gamebryo 2.3 is no longer supported. You will need to upgrade your DirectX SDK and (if you're using it) PhysX SDK, but existing project code will still work. Breaking changes between Gamebryo 2.3 and 2.5 are in the Gamebryo help files.

VrpnNet 1.0.2 coming soon

I've added Visual Studio 2008 projects to the source distribution, and will be releasing them as version 1.0.2 within a few days. The VS2008 project still officially targets .NET Framework 2.0.

VrpnNet 1.0.1 released

Of course there would have to be a bugfix release immediately. This release fixes only one bug, but that bug was rendering Vrpn.AnalogRemote utterly useless. Hopefully there aren't any others like that hiding in the code, but it seems like there's always something.

VrpnNet 1.0.0 released

I've released the first version of VrpnNet, a series of .NET bindings for VRPN. Now languages like C# and VB.NET can be used to write clients for VRPN. (Server classes are coming later.)
