Very interesting read on learning and mindset

From Scientific American “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol S. Dweck. Hint: Don’t tell your kids that they are. More than three decades of research shows that a focus on effort—not on intelligence or ability—is key to success in school and in life.

I see these differences in our students.

I just read that yesterday. My wife and I saw something similar to it (reading the article, I think it was one of the earlier studies) a while back and have been trying to do this with our son who is just in 1st grade this year. He can be very energetic about doing stuff and we’re trying to encourage him with whatever he wants to do so after reading these kinds of articles we’re careful to praise how hard he works and how much effort he puts into things. Here’s hoping it works out.

P.S. BTW, found your blog randomly somewhere. How are things at UNC these days?
