HOW TO:   Securexam for COMP 380  [PRINT THIS PAGE!]

Be sure your battery is charged, take an extra battery if you have one, and BRING your power cord!  If the exam will be given elsewhere, the room will be announced in class.

Securexam is a piece of software that you can download and install on your notebook computer.  It allows you to take your exam during class using Microsoft Word—you are essentially shut out from using any other applications (or loading any other documents) during the exam; and the Word document that you save will be encrypted before it is saved.  Then, you’ll upload it to Blackboard (see below).

You MUST install and test the Securexam software yourself, ahead of the exam date.  Visit the web site below and read ALL THE WAY THROUGH the instructions ahead of time.  While the instructions are clear, you need to figure everything out in advance.  Print out the instructions they provide for uploading your exam and take them to class with you.  Print out this document as well.  BRING a bluebook, just in case—none of us can guarantee that your computer will not crash or experience other difficulties.  Heed all of the warnings you read.

Here’s the URL containing the software and instructions:

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS (which will be included on the EXAM):

  • During class:  Start up Secure exam, and complete as follows:

EXAM ID:                          LastName- PreferredFirstName   [no commas]

Class Name:                     COMP 380, Sec 003

Prof:                                 Pozefsky

Date:                                [type in today’s date]

Then check the Blue Book box and click OK.   You’ll be prompted to type START.

You exam will be autosaved periodically to your desktop.

When you are sure you are finished the exam:  select EXIT (not save) from File menu.  Then Exit Exam and then Proceed.  At the save-where prompt, save your file to your DESKTOP.  Do NOT change the filename!  The filename should begin with SSI.  Ignore the Excel file.

HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR EXAM:  Your exam must be uploaded to the correct Exam Link at the end of class.  You can submit your exam only once, so be sure it’s the correct document (three are generated).  Upload ONLY the Word document.

If you cannot see filename extensions (such as .doc, .xls, .txt), or cannot tell which file to send, turn that feature on now:  Open My Computer; TOOLS menu;  select Folder Options; Click on the VIEW tab.

Scroll down to the option “Hide Extensions for Known File Types” and DE-select that box (effectively un-hiding them).  UPLOAD only the .doc file.  [If you upload the wrong file, I will notify you via email, so read your email.]

Using a browser, go to blackboard.unc.edu and log into this course/section.

Look at the left-hand panel and find SECUREXAM link, and click on it.  From there, enter the correct area (e.g., “midterm exam”), read the instructions carefully.  Click View/Complete link.

Upload ONLY the Word document!
