Course Overview
This course is offered as an introduction to how computers work. It covers a broad range of topics, including a historical overview, data representation and processing, concepts about computer applications (power tools), how to program a computer to solve certain problems, and the computer's potential for use and abuse in our society. You will use the Windows operating system, and the Microsoft Office suite of tools, including MS Word for word processing, Excel for spreadsheets, Access for databases, and PowerPoint for presentations. You will learn to create your own Web pages, and write simple programs in the Turing language. The laboratory (homework) portion of the course continues with the computer's power tools: it will provide you with detailed instruction and hands-on experience with very popular computer applications, and with an opportunity to design and to write your own programs.
This is a comprehensive survey course that goes far beyond learning computer operations. If you are looking only for hands-on computer & software training, enroll instead in one of the many classes offered by ATN. If you are already comfortable using a computer and want to learn how to program effectively, consider taking COMP 14 instead.
