My Digital Hand on Amazon AWS

We're happy to offer My Digital Hand as a standalone Amazon AWS EC2 Instance.

This means that you can use AWS to clone your own instance of My Digital Hand at any time for use at your own university. The entire app has been packaged, so all of the data gathered by the tool at your university will reside privately on the AWS server for your own use.

To create your own AWS instance of My Digital Hand, you must first have an AWS account with Amazon. Instructions for creating an AWS account can be found here.

Once your AWS account has been created, you are ready to launch an instance of My Digital Hand. This may be completed from the Amazon AWS EC2 console from your browser.

  1. Open Amazon AWS's EC2 console from your browser.
  2. Click the blue button to launch a new instance.
  3. Select "Community AMIs" on the left-side menu and search for "mydigitalhand" with no spaces. Select the official release of My Digital Hand.
  4. Continue through the instance setup process, making sure to open the HTTP port (port 80) to the instance on Step 6 Configure Security Group. All other settings during the setup process can be left alone.
  5. Upon completion of the setup process, Amazon may ask you to select a key pair for connecting to your new instance. Since you will not need to access the instance other than through the web browser, you can safely proceed without a key pair.
  6. Visit your new instance's public DNS URL from any browser to complete the one-time MDH configuration form.

Amazon also provides a tutorial for creating a new instance in case you need more detailed instructions.
