Papers on terrains (of varying quality) with comment:

  • PapersFromGeoInformatica <-- lots more here...

  • mlstream.pdf Multi-level streaming for out-of-core surface reconstruction, M. Bolitho, M. Kazhdan, R. Burns, H. Hoppe, Symposium on Geometry Processing 2007. Streaming surface reconstruction based on their previous Poisson method, which assumes that points and normals are given, and makes the surface as the zero-level isosurface.
  • consist_diffop.pdf Consistent Computation of First-and Second-Order Differential Quantities for Surface Meshes, X Jiao, H Zha, SPM 2008: how to compute derivatives on surface meshes
  • bertram-tcvg-vis03.pdf: Adaptive Smooth Scattered-data Approximation for Large-scale Terrain Visualization, Bertram, Tricoche, Hagen, TCVG Symp on Vis, 2003.
  • View-dependent Adaptive Tessellation of Spline Surfaces (2001 ACM Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics, North Carolina, Mar 19-21, 2001)
Jatin Chhugani and Subodh Kumar. (pp 59--62)
We present a novel algorithm for dynamic adaptive triangulation of spline surfaces. The algorithm is dynamic because it adjusts the level of detail of the triangulation at each frame. It is adaptive because it samples each surface patch more densely in regions of high curvature and less densely in regions of low curvature. The two have not been combined before. Our algorithm pre-computes a prioritized list of important samples on the surface. At rendering time, it adds these points in the specified order to the triangulation. Once the pre-computed points are exhausted and even more detail is required on some region of the patch, additional samples, now uniformly spaced, are added to the triangulation. The algorithm works well in practice and has a low memory footprint. PPT slides ColorPlate
  • lidar_gisruk05.doc: lidar error characteristics (from GISRUK05)
A preliminary study, but a good one.
  • smoke-ceus05.pdf: Robert MacFarlane, Harry Stagg, Keith Turner and Matthew Lievesley, Peering through the smoke? Tensions in landscape visualisation, Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, Volume 29, Issue 3, May 2005, Pages 341-359. It is always interesting to take a look at what the "softer" issues than the mathematics and engineering for new technology, which is what this paper does.
  • Digital Terrain Models - Traps for the Unwary, paper by S.M.Wise at geocomputation 1998. A rant on how rasters are not models. (No solutions suggested however.)
